I am a recipient of the APLE, the California State Teacher Loan Forgiveness program.  I currently work in the field of Special Education in a low-income school.  I chose this path specifically because of the supposed “benefits” of earning forgiveness of my student loans.  For the past school year, I earned a $5,000 payment to my loan holder as part of this “forgiveness.” My student loans were recently taken over by Sallie Mae while I was still in educational deferment.  My APLE payment was sent to them by my previous loan holder, Citibank.  Upon looking at my online statement, I realized that Sallie Mae had applied most (about $3,200) of my APLE payment of $5,000, to their interest and some “late fees” that should not have existed as I had never been in repayment with them and I was, at the time, still in deferment.

I wrote them a letter asking to apply all my APLE funds to the principal and they mailed me a letter that said “payments received from APLE Loan Forgiveness cannot be applied based on customer request.”  I then sent an email to APLE concerning this issue and they wrote back: “The lenders are supposed to apply payment to outstanding principal first, however it is up to their discretion.”

I have worked so utterly hard to just have my FORGIVENESS thrown away to Sallie Mae’s interest, not to my principal.  This, in no way, is a forgiveness of my loans; it is a pillaging by the banks without government protections.

Anyone who says “They should just pay their loans, they knew what they were doing” has never dealt with Sallie Mae! Until they no longer exist, we will not have fairness in higher education! They are the worst of the worst and their is no way to hold them accountable. They control the system and profit heavily off of today’s and tomorrow youth. If you don’t think this is a big problem, just wait a few years.

…but you’re right, there’s probably no way we could cut that defense budget.
